We come in all shapes, sizes and colours. While everyone's skin is subject to bouts of dryness, excessive oiliness or even a combination of both, genetics can give our skin a predisposition to certain conditions. Dark skinned persons of African descent run the gammit of skin types, but have a genetic likelihood for blemishes and enlarged pores due to naturally larger oil glands. Therefore, those with dark skin need to take some extra skin care steps. It's a common assumption that dark skin is somehow resistant to the effects of the ultra-violet rays of the sun. Not true at all. All skin types are susceptible to the sun's rays, so make sure you use a good quality sunscreen to prevent burning and skin damage. Drinking lots of water will reduce the amount of oil your body produces and help keep your skin fresh and healthy. Hydration is important on oily prone skin, so drinking water along with a good moisturizing and cleansing routine are the best plan to have clear and beautiful skin. Overwashing or using too much hot water can strip your body of natural oils and cause your glands to start overproducing. However, using a gentle, milk-based cleanser twice a day and rinsing with warm water will prevent this. Follow up with a nourishing moisturizer to balance out your skin tone. A good face mask, such as those made from oatmeal, applied once or twice a week will help replenish your face as well as exfoliate and remove any dead skin cells which can clog pores. Stay away from peels containing too much salacylic acid as this may dry out your skin. Oatmeal on the other hand is a natural hydrating agent as well as a fabulous exfoliant. Caring for African skin requires balancing the skin's natural tendancies to keep your overall oil levels consistant without chapping or drying your fragile shell. While you may have to experiment with a couple different types of cleansers or lotions, once you find a product you like, both your skin and your skin care routine will be delightful and smooth.
