The last thing you do for your eye make up is generally the mascara. It's almost a shame, because you need to do it last to cover any powder that's fallen onto the lash, and yet, if you make a mistake you'll ruin the whole look and have to start over. The secret to good mascara is finding the right mascara that does everything you want it to do. Choosing the brand, colour or style that your sister or friend uses may not give you the results that are best for you. Before buying mascara, decide what you want it to do. Are you looking for long, thick lashes, or just a clean and distinct set to offset your eyes. The type of mascara you buy will determine how it looks. Volumizing, lengthening and so on, the benefits of each product is written on the package. So, don't buy what you don't want. The type of brush you apply it with is also important. If you want thick lashes, use a thick brush with lots of closely set teeth. If you want definition in your lashes, choose a brush that has long, wide set teeth. Much like the type of mascara you use defines the look, the right brush makes all the difference. If your eyes are sensitive and you don't want mascara bleeding into them, use a wax based mascara, (commonly waterproof mascaras). If your eyes are normal, then you should use water soluble mascaras. They may not be waterproof, but they do come water resistant. The benefit of water based mascara is that its less likely to streak and it's easy to take off, especially if you do make a mistake. When it comes to mascara, black is always best. If your lashes are really blond, you can get away with a brown or brown-black coloured mascara, otherwise, basic black extends the lengthening effect of mascara. It's also easier to maintain and is less likely to make slight clumps stand out conspicuously.
