However, there are some travellers who may not be aware of just how extensive the UK's home-grown options are when it comes to some types of holidays - particularly skiing breaks.
Even if you're a seasoned pro who's tackled the pistes of the Alps and the Rockies, you could be surprised by the quality of the UK's skiing options. Despite Britain not being renowned for its skiing opportunities, nor its mountain ranges for that matter, there are a number of highly competitive ski resorts across the nation, and not only in Scotland where temperatures tend to be better suited to the sport. This has particularly been the case over the last two years, where freezing temperatures and an abundance of snowfall across the UK have caused much consternation - apart from among ski enthusiasts, that is.
One of England's best known skiing regions is Cumbria, where towering mountains like Hellvellyn offer ideal conditions for winter sports throughout most of the season, at ski centres such as Raise. The ski runs here are often more than one kilometre in length, depending on snowfall, and on-site facilities include a permanent button lift and a ski lodge that's doubly famous for being the highest building in the country. Another popular ski centre in Cumbria is the vast Yad Moss, which recently revamped its offerings with the aid of a lottery grant, to make it even more appealing to return visitors and newcomers alike.
Wales is a great destination for ski holidays too, with the interesting terrain of areas like the Brecon Beacons being natural draws for skiers. Although there are no pistes, the landscape can still be well suited to down-slope runs, as well as other winter sports such as snowboarding and tobogganing, and anyone interested in visiting the region can receive up-to-date weather reports from sites such as the Storey Arms Outdoor Education Centre to ensure their safety on weekend breaks in Brecon.
As well as its natural ski environments, the UK is also home to a huge number of indoor and dry ski slopes, which can be a good alternative if you're just looking for a day's skiing, or a place to improve your abilities before heading back to the mountains. Sheffield Ski Village is the best known of these, and the largest all-season skiing range in Europe.
