Teaching your kids about the importance of looking after themselves is one of the most important things you'll have to do as a parent and while this can seem like a daunting task, it doesn't have to be. Obviously, you want to do your best for your children and giving your kids the ability to look after themselves in the future is one of the best things you can do. Just remember that kinds learn by copying - they'll do what you do not what you say, so make sure you practice what you preach. When you're young, it is much harder to tell the difference between what is a healthy food and what isn't, so be sure to educate them as early as possible. Ensure that high fat and sugar snacks are kept to a minimum, and that your children know they are only to be enjoyed occasionally. On the other hand, be sure to also refer to healthy snacks as 'good treats' - after all fruit is nice and sweet too - as this will help them avoid the idea that fresh fruit is a chore. Exercise is another habit you'll want to instil in your kids early on, and by getting your kids enthused about taking part early on, you're giving them a better chance to continue to stay fit as they grow older. Team games such as football can be perfect for helping your kids get into a routine, but if you're children prefer to play alone, think about sports such as tennis or even golf, or enrol them in classes such as gymnastics to allow them to concentrate on their individual achievements. Another good lesson to pass on is the importance of turning up to health appointments. If you're not a fan of the doctor or dentist, it can be all too easy to give your kids a negative impression too. However, this could cause problems for them later in life, so put a brave face on and make sure your children don't become nervous about them - you may also be able to take out the sting by choosing insurance that allows you to claim back treatments costs, making it easier for you to make the experience seem like a positive one. Pass on good health habits to your kids, and they'll be thanking you their whole lives through.
