One of the things consumers consider when they are seeking to buy or rent a property is whether there will be enough storage for their books. Prior to the invention of Caxton's printing press, the production of tomes was kept to a minimum because they had to be written out by hand - which was a time consuming and laborious process. The books that were produced were generally kept in boxes and chests, it noted. After this development, however, many more such items came into circulation and different ways of keeping and displaying them were called for. These cupboards subsequently became bookcases when it was decided they should be constructed without doors. "Bookcases were of a very severe appearance and quite a few attempts were made to make them more attractive," the blog noted. Meanwhile, in public libraries such as the British Museum, shelves to store books were frequently made from iron with cowhide covers. These days of course, storage for books comes in a wide variety of attractive designs and materials and the vast majority of houses contain such areas - although some take this much further than others. Indeed, this form of container for books and other similar-sized items is often considered by homeowners to be an integral part of the way their rooms look. So as well as their practical value, they also serve an aesthetic purpose, helping consumers make their mark on walls and other areas around their residences and potentially attracting others to buy them if and when they want to sell up.
