This city is located in North West England and is considered to be a part of Greater Manchester, England. The population of Manchester is estimated to be over 450, 000 people. Throughout the middle ages, this city was considered to be a rurally located township, but textile manufacturing caused it to rapidly expand. Today, Manchester is the center of the media, higher education, the arts, and commerce. In 2006, it was regarded to be the best place to have a business in the UK. The oldest free public library in the UK is found in Manchester, it is called Chetham's Library and was opened in 1653. Manchester also became such a large cotton marketplace that it was dubbed "Cottonopolis". The term "manchester" is still used in New Zealand, South Africa, and Australia for linen found in the household. Sites to see in Manchester include the Green building, one of the few eco-friendly housing projects found in the UK. There is also Piccadilly Gardens, with dedicated monuments to Robert Peel, James Watt, Queen Victoria, and Duke of Wellington.
