A good abs workout is the one exercise my clients most often want to do. Butts and Thighs take a close 2nd but abs are on top of most of my clients lists. Often referred to as a sausage roll, muffin top, spare tire or love handles…. Regardless what you call it, it’s not desirable. Its probably the one area that defines us the most when gaining or losing weight. That feeling of buttoning up your pants and having all this extra room is exhilarating, quite the opposite if you’re straining to button them up! Not to fret though. If you’re stressing about the bulge then its time to make changes. Training your abs to look great can be done. But exercise alone wont give you that flat ‘6-pack’ look so many crave. Diet is a huge component as most importantly, you must shed the fat on your stomach before the muscles will show definition. One of my favorite tips to give clients is incorporating a stability ball into your abs workout. Actually, I’m a firm believer in using for many other exercises too. Back to abs though, you will engage way more muscles in your abdominal area if you balance yourself on the ball when doing standard ab crunches. When it comes to your diet, eating smaller meals that consist of carbs, protein and good fats, throughout the day, will benefit your abs workout goal. Make sure you’re not cutting out too many daily calories, as you don’t want to go into starvation mode. This is a very short-term solution that backfires 99.9% of the time. Don’t forget to drink water and lots of it! Most of us are dehydrated and often we confuse hunger signals with dehydration. Keep a reusable water bottle by you at all times and drink. This will also help deplete the excess fecal matter that could be causing you to look and feel bloated. Lets not forget about cardio. Interval cardio workouts are great at speeding up your metabolism and depleting those fat storage areas! Find a cardio program that you enjoy so it doesn’t feel like work. You’ll look forward to it and won’t have to convince yourself it’s a “task”… Its very difficult to “spot train” meaning only getting results on one specific area. You do have to train your entire body and will reap the rewards in your arms, shoulders, butt, thighs etc… You can focus on training your abs often though as they don’t require as much ‘in between’ rest as the other areas.
