Families visiting Barcelona will find a number of family attractions as well as cheap hotels in Barcelona. Some of the places for families to visit in Barcelona are L’Aquarium de Barcelona, the Barcelona zoo, Tibidabo amusement park, the Illa Fantasia water park and the beaches. The aquarium has about 450 species of marine life. The Oceanarium is the largest tank in the aquarium. It has a diameter of 36 meters (118 feet) and it is over five meters (16 feet) deep. Visitors can walk through a transparent tunnel under the Oceanarium. Species in this tank include sharks, morays, rays, giltheads and ocean sunfish. There is a Children’s Zoo at the Barcelona Zoo where children can pet sheep and goats. This area also has horses, cows and donkeys. Bottlenose dolphins perform in the zoo’s Aquarama facility. The Terrarium houses amphibians and reptiles. There is a picnic area at the zoo. Tibidabo amusement park is at the top of Tibidabo Mountain approximately 25 minutes from the centre of Barcelona. Visitors take a tram and a funicular to go up the mountain. The park dates back to 1889. Many of the rides here are rides that would have been in an amusement park at that time. A Ferris wheel and a carousel are two of the rides. Visitors can take a train through the park and there is a monorail for children. Food is sold at the park and there are picnic areas for those who wish to bring their own food. Illa Fantasia Water Park is a 30 minute train ride from the city centre. It is only open in the summer. There are three swimming pools and more than 20 water slides here. Small children can participate in the Splash n Slide activities. The park has restaurants and a large picnic area. The closest beach to Barcelona is Barceloneta which is within walking distance of the city centre. Visitors can sunbathe or swim. Kite surfing and windsurfing are popular activities here. Drinks can be purchased from beach huts. Ocata Beach is a 30 minute train ride away from the city. This beach is quiet and spacious. Families vacationing in Barcelona will find a number of activities that children will enjoy.
