It’s fun getting lost in New York City because in many ways, if you know how to count, you can’t really too lost. The streets are mostly numbered making it easy for tourists to walk for miles without running out of interesting stores, attractions and restaurants to visit. The attractions in New York are plentiful – from world-famous museums to Broadway shows to the Statue of Liberty -- New York is a town that will excite and inspire. But New York is also a place that can easily eat up your budget if you are not careful. In addition to the travelling costs (especially if you fly), your largest costs can be room and board. In some of the swankier hotels such as the W or even the Sheraton – rooms can easily run between $500 and up. But fear not budget travellers because there are some good and cheap hotels in New York that fit the bill of affordable but not horrible. In other words, there are plenty of hotels that will provide safe, clean rooms at a price that will leave you some extra cash for going to see a Broadway show. Cheap hotels in New York can be found in all the major attraction areas – such as Midtown Manhattan where you will find the glamour of Rockefeller Center and the neon frenzy of Times Square. The key is to find a place where you can easily reach the attractions you wish to visit. Subway fares are affordable – but if you are travelling to the city during the spring or autumn months, walking is a very enjoyable experience. The Pod Hotel is one such place and has recently been retrofitted. Room rates will run about $116 for a shared bath to $224 for a private bathroom. Also in Midtown is The New Yorker – a favourite for many travellers for its simple yet stately rooms. This 912-room hotel will run you between $119 to $139 per night. Another Midtown hotel for budget travellers is the Hotel Riverside Studios which sits in the heart of the theatre district and rates will run you $71 and up. For a slightly higher price in Midtown, The Roosevelt Hotel is a historic hotel that has been around since the 1920s (but recently renovated) and offers spacious rooms with amenities such as television, wireless, blow dryers and more. Room rates will vary from $143 to $191. If enjoy the sidewalk cafes and museums of the Upper Westside, then the Days Hotel Broadway, located conveniently near Central and Riverside parks is available with rates ranging from $71 to $111. *All the rates in this article are based on double occupancy and the rates do vary during depending on season.
