Look at any toilet vending machines and you will probably be confronted with a great supply of hotel toiletries or sanitary products. One of these machines has already been installed at the Overlake Hospital and is being used to treat patients of varying blood groups. Speaking to the website, Andrea Nordmark said: “ It talks to us and the Puget Sound Blood Centre computer talks to it and it is very efficient. “It picks the exact unit that it wants us to give the patient and then we walk up to the refrigerator.” She goes on to explain that the machine allows the medical staff to type in the patient’s medical number and then it will dispense a unit of blood for that particular individual. The machines are able to keep the blood at the right temperature and only dispense what is needed, so it reduces any waste. Andrea adds: “We don’t want to waste any blood as it is a precious resource.” There are now plans to install a further twelve machines in other hospitals in the surrounding area.
