Light fittings can have a huge impact on outside areas as well as in homes. For this reason, a rising number of people in the UK and elsewhere are investing in outdoor lighting for their gardens. However, it is not only private property that can benefit from attractive light fittings, as one campaigner has been arguing. John Fairbrother has called on his local council to fix outdoor lighting on a bridge in his town, Melton Today reports. In 1992, Pedigree Petfoods donated ornamental lighting to span Burton Road Bridge and the feature lasted for three years. During this period, it was maintained by the firm, before Melton Council took over responsibility. Since this time, the condition of the lights has worsened and they are no longer used. Mr Fairbrother is calling on Melton Council to renovate them to and get them back in operation. He stated: "Many of the lights now don't work and the paintwork and metalwork needs to be restored. There are normal street lights across the bridge but they look out of place and I've been assured the ornamental ones would provide more light than the legal requirement if only they were working." The campaigner went on to suggest that as the new council offices are going up, now is the perfect time for the organisation to light up the bridge and create a "fitting gateway" into the town. Meanwhile, responding to the calls, a spokesman for the local authority suggested that the organisation is looking into the issue and will discuss it at the Highways Forum this month. This will be part of a broader examination of the town station site and regeneration options for the area, the representative added.
