In 1879, when Colorado Springs took pride in its gas lights, privies, telephones, wide boulevards and 20 doctors, Dr. William Bartlett arrived. He was then 23, fresh from Massachusetts and the four years of studying dentistry with his father. He had moved to Colorado Springs because he read in a magazine that it was “the greatest place on Earth to live”. Dr. Bartlett was the first dentist in Colorado Springs. He was also the first anesthesiologist in the area. He would literally pry open and examine the mouths of gold tycoons James Burns and Albert Carlton and other prominent members of that Colorado Springs era. After a few years, more and more dentists came to practice in the city. In 1909, the city conducted its first dental community service. The community service had three functions: to provide free oral and dental examinations for all public school children and to provide reports regarding their condition; to allow dentists to work together in establishing a dental clinic for the impoverished; and to teach parents, teachers and children about dental hygiene through a series of classes. Also, during this time, Colorado Springs dentistry gave way to the discovery of the use of fluoride through the efforts of Dr. Frederick McKay. Dr. McKay was the first to conduct research on a condition affecting people’s teeth, which was called the Colorado Brown Stain. This research led to the discovery of fluoride as an effective protective compound against cavities if used in very small quantities. Until today, Colorado Springs dentistry continues to develop to provide both knowledge and state-of-the-art services to its residents.
