Appendicitis is a digestive condition and means the inflammation of the appendix, a tube of tissue that extends from the large intestine. Totally different from the intestines, the membrane lining the abdominal cavity, known as peritoneum, can sense any ordinary pain. When the inflammation penetrates the intestinal wall the pain is felt at its precise location but in some cases the inflammation is shielded from the abdominal wall by the intestines and the patient will experience a minimal localized pain. It is good to know that appendicitis occurs when the appendix becomes blocked either by swelling of the intestinal lining or by a plug of stool. In time, while the infection progresses, the walls of the appendix will be penetrated leading to severe pain in the right lower portion of the abdomen.
