When you first start promoting your website using SEO, it's tempting to find the single most popular keyword you can and devoting all your time to ranking for that single keyword. While this can bring you decent traffic, the most popular websites take advantage of dozens, even hundreds of longer, less popular keywords that can also potentially bring in a ton of traffic. In most cases, the combined popularity of long-tail keywords actually outweighs the popularity of the most popular keyword you're targeting. In this article, I'll explain why long-tail keywords are important and how to take advantage of long-tail keywords. Traffic As previously mentioned, the most obvious benefit of ranking high for long-tail keywords is traffic. My own website gets about 10% of its traffic from its most popular keyword. What that means is that 90% of visits to my site are due to my high ranking for less popular, long tail keywords. Not just that, but the longer the keyword, the more targeted your audience becomes. For example, if you run a New York SEO Company, you could try to rank for the keyword "SEO." This is the most popular keyword that's related to your service. Even better would be to rank for "SEO Services," because people who search for SEO services are more likely to be looking for your business than simply searchers for "SEO." And finally, even better would be to rank for "New York SEO Services," because that is an extremely targeted group of searchers that you want to be exposed to. The moral of the story is, for more and better traffic, tackle long tail keywords. Speed Since long-tail keywords are less popular, they are easier to rank for than the most popular keywords. There is less competition in your way to rank for "New Orleans Swimming Pools" than simply, "Swimming Pools." Therefore, you can reach the top of the SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages) more quickly by targeting long-tail keywords because there will be less competition to fend off. How to Find Long Tail Keywords If you've been running your website for several months, you might be using Google Analytics or a similar analytics/tracking software. In this software, search for the terms people are using to find your site. Copy down the list of the top 50 keywords and work on ranking higher for those phrases. If you do not have any analytics software or are starting a brand new site, check out Google's keyword tool and type in your most popular keyword into the search box. Google will return to you a list of related keywords, ranging in popularity, that you can use for your own site. By ranking #1 in Google (or at least the Top 3) for dozens of long-tail keywords, you'll be in prime position to take advantage of a fuller spectrum of your audience.
