A quick glance through any telephone book or Internet directory will quickly remind you that, when it comes to caring for your teeth, there are a number of dentists hoping to acquire your business. In light of their many responsibilities---cleaning teeth, filling cavities, monitoring for signs of gum disease and tooth decay and much more---selecting the best qualified individual for the job is of the highest importance. Knowing what to ask and what to evaluate can ensure that the right choice is made. First, make a list of your top candidates, and then check each of their educational backgrounds. The most important thing is to ensure that they have received a degree, either as a doctor of dental surgery, or a doctor of dental medicine. Look for at least a two-year degree or better yet, a four-year degree, as the majority of students in dental programs have completed a bachelor’s degree. Also, check to see that each candidate has taken and successfully passed the Dental School Admission test, or DAT. This is particularly important, as it indicates that the dentists you are considering have registered with the American Dental Association. Make sure that each candidate enrolled in and graduated from an accredited dental school, as this ensures that they have taken the necessary courses in clinical science, laboratory techniques, and other subjects required to safely and successfully practice. It also reassures potential patients that the dentist has had sufficient hands-on experience treating clients under the watchful eyes of licensed professionals prior to beginning his practice. Finally, be sure that each candidate has been licensed, and that his credentials and certifications are up to date. Once you have a list of suitably qualified candidates, set up a time to meet with each of the dentists before arranging a formal office visit. Observe how each one interacts with his or her staff, as well as other clients. Make note of how you are treated as well. Does the staff seem interested in your concerns? Do they ask about your dental history? Do they seem harried or impatient that you are there? Be sure to talk with other patients to get their honest opinions of the dentist. Find out how long they have been under his care, what attracted them to him, if there have been any problems, and if so, how were they handled. This will help to narrow your list down to the top two or three dentists. Finally, schedule an office visit to have a minor procedure, such as a cleaning, done with the first choice on your newly shortened list. This will allow you to better gauge his ability and professional demeanor before you present other, more difficult problems and procedures. During your visit, take note of the dentist’s manner. Was he on time? Was he thoroughly prepared for what he was to do? Did he make you feel at ease and answer any questions before work began? If the first candidate did not meet your expectations, schedule any future routine procedures with the next person on the list, and so on, until you find one who is satisfactory.
