Andros Island is the largest of the Bahamas islands it is comprised of 3 major islands; North Andros, Mangrove Cay and South Andros and there is the world’s third largest barrier reef which is known by the locals there as the Big Yard, there is a population of just over 6,000 which makes it the least populated of all the Bahamas islands. There is a myth on Andros that there is a creature called the Chickcharne which is said to be half man half bird which lives underwater protecting against evil, there is also said to be a sea monster similar to a dragon called the Lusca and this creature is said to hide in the blue holes. In the beginning the first people on the island were the indigenous Lucayan people, they were all wiped out when the Spanish arrived on the island in the 1550s due to diseases that they weren’t immune to which were brought over with the Spanish, the island is allegedly named after a commander of the British forces – Edmund Andros. Pirates were present on the island in the 18th century and lived in various parts of the island. When the Spanish arrived on the island they named it Isla Del Espirita Santo – The Island of the Holy Spirit which was in acknowledgment to the vast amount of water on Andros, there are thousands of inland waterways on the island.
