Lighting at work and at home.

Online Shopping
Many people think they know a thing or two about interior design, and well they might. It’s easy to pick up tricks of the trade from magazines and television shows about colours, the hundred and one things you can do with MDF and furniture placement. But, one of the aspects of interior design which isn’t as sexy as the stuff you see on television is lighting – and ironically, this is one of the most important features of how a room looks and most importantly, how liveable it is. Lighting, done well, can make a space comfortable, welcoming and unobtrusive. But done badly, it can make it impossible for you to relax at best and physically uncomfortable at worst.

The other interesting thing about lighting is how ubiquitous it is. Go anywhere, from shop to home to festival marquee and lighting is a feature. Even in southern hemisphere countries, where sunlight abounds and natural light is captured as much as possible, the sun still goes down, the sky still darkens, and lighting is required. Home lighting has different considerations to work lighting, where discomfort would be better avoided but won’t have as much impact on your business.

Shop lighting and trade lighting are different altogether.

Let’s start with the former. Shop lighting has to be effective, in the sense that it has to help potential customers find their way through the shop with ease and comfort. This is especially important for shops that might be tucked away in the back of a shopping centre and receive no natural light.

But this type of lighting can also be used to help with the marketing of the products in the shop. Using spotlights to highlight certain products – item of the month for example – will help to encourage people to examine these items if not buy them.

Lighting is probably nowhere more important than in the changing rooms of clothes shops, where flattering lighting can make all the difference between a customer walking out of the shop with an item in a bag, or leaving it on the hanger.

Trade lighting in the retail sector is important for all the above reasons, though it has to have a more practical effect where tools and smaller items are concerned. Perhaps putting a brighter spotlight above the counter where smaller more expensive items are kept so that people can ask for a closer look in better light would be handy.

For more back of shop purposes, trade lighting in warehouses is vital for the health and safety for all who work there. Effective lighting in warehouses were there may be no natural light helps the people who work there find what they need but also ensure their personal safety is not at risk when they are doing so. Consider the amount of larger and heavier items found in trade warehouses and you will soon realise how important trade lighting is.

In conclusion, it would be fair to say that lighting in all its forms – domestic, trade, retail – is somewhat an unsung hero of the home and workplace.
