Sexually active people who engage in sex with more than one partner should consider STD testing. However, not all clinics perform the same tests as a matter of routine. Rather testing is sometimes only administered by risk factors, and symptoms. One way to decrease risk for contracting sexually transmitted diseases is to only have sex with one partner, or abstain. Yet, this is not always reality. If you think you might have contracted a sexually transmitted disease then immediate testing is the way to go. Women should at a minimum have a Pap test done. This procedure tests for Cervical Cancer, which can be caused from HPV, a common STD. Females 21 years of age and older should obtain this test. In addition, within a 3-year period of becoming sexually active a Pap test is recommended. It is also advised that woman under the age of 25 be tested for the STD Chlamydia. The Center for Disease Control does not offer any guidelines for men who do not display symptoms. Men who engage in sex with other men you should be tested annually for the HIV virus, Syphilis, Gonorrhea, and Chlamydia. HIV and syphilis can kill you if not treated in a timely manner. Both Gonorrhea and Chlamydia increase the risk of HIV, so it is important to get tested if there is a potential for having contracted one of these diseases. To test for specific sexually transmitted diseases some guidelines should be followed. Gonorrhea and Chlamydia should be tested once a year for woman under 25 if sexually active, and for woman who have several sex partners who are over the age of 25. Men who engage in sex with other men also need to be tested for these diseases and for HIV and Syphilis. Testing for Syphilis is done by obtaining a sample from the sores, or through a blood test. It is probable that if you have recently been infected with an STD the test will come back negative. This is because these tests measure the amount of antibodies that are trying to fight the disease. It can be a few weeks before a positive result can be obtained. There is not a reliable way to test for Herpes. Blood tests can sometimes detect the infection, but the results should not be relied on. It is also possible to receive a false positive when testing for the Herpes virus. If you think you have the Herpes virus see your doctor. Even though the test is not decisive, your doctor may still prescribe the test. To summarize, sexually active individuals should consider being tested for sexually transmitted diseases. Not all clinics test for the same diseases as a matter of routine. However, your doctor can prescribe a specific test should it be needed. There are no official testing guidelines for men without symptoms. However, men who engage in sex with men need to be annually tested for HIV and Syphilis. HIV and Syphilis if not treated early can be life threatening illnesses.
