I was recently talking to my sister in law, and she was reading off to me the litany of complaints about her children. In all honesty, her children are great kids; I really could not ask for better nieces and nephews, but for whatever reasons, airing her grievances about her children is one of the ways that my sister in law copes with stress, so I just listen and smile. My niece, fifteen years old, smart and absolutely lovely, has one major issue right now, and that is her teeth. Oddly enough, they are not an issue to my niece, who likes them just the way they are, but they do bother my sister in law, who says that they are too crooked and that she needs braces. Personally, I never really noticed, but I guess where the problem lies is that my niece really doesn't want braces. For her, it would be worse to have the metal teeth than to actually have the teeth straightened. I listened to this for a while as my sister in law bewailed the fate of having a daughter without perfect teeth, and then mentioned that there are all kinds of braces these days that are not necessarily intrusive; that she could get clear braces, or even braces that attach to the back of the teeth if she really does not want the traditional kind. She perked up a bit and said that she would discuss it with her daughter. Regardless of what happens, I am sure there will be something to hear about the next time I call.
