I have only ever owned used cars. This is more than a choice, it is a matter of principle. My father told me that I should avoid buying a new car, because they have not broken yet, and with a used car, everything that would break has already been broken and replaced by something else and is therefore a better car. Watching some of the difficulties that my friends have gone through with their new cars, I think the old man knew what he was talking about, and so every car I have ever owned was purchased as a used car. I have followed this policy religiously, and I have never regretted it. As such, I have only ever owned a handful of cars. They have held up so well that I have only replaced them when they have outlived their usefulness to my family. My family has grown a lot over the years, necessitating that we purchase larger cars to make sure that everyone can travel together and not be left behind. Because the used cars are in good shape, the resale value is not so bad compared to what I purchased them for, so I do not actually lose much on the trade in, and I can generally apply that money directly to the purchase of our next vehicle. We have another baby on the way, and currently drive a minivan. The next car we purchase will either be a van or a fifteen passenger vehicle so that we can use the extra space for road trips and shopping.
