The difference between anime and cartoons has been the subject of many discussions between animators, and an argument among many anime fanatics and regular TV and movie viewers. Many people think that visual presentations that are hand-drawn and processed with computer technology are alike, when, in fact, there’s a line that separates the two. During the Renaissance period, the term ‘cartoons’ can be used to refer to anything in relation to the fine arts. The term has been widely used as a reference to visual arts and illustrations that has been put into media, such as television and movies. Throughout the years, people became used to referring to all forms of animation as cartoons. Things may have changed when anime entered the picture. Some people actually say that anime is a genre of cartoons. Considering this, there’s really no difference between anime and cartoons, since anime is merely a more specific term for Japanese cartoons or animation. However, many animation experts believe that these two concepts can be distinguished from each other through their illustration methods. People who watch anime movies can automatically define the difference between an anime character and a Western cartoon, for example. Characters in anime movies have exaggeratedly expressive facial attributes, especially when it comes to their eyes. The physical reactions of anime characters may be exaggerated, as well. On the other hand, Western cartoon characters have more realistic physical qualities. When it comes to plots and storylines, anime focuses on myths and legendary creatures. These fantasy-centered plotlines encourage people to watch anime movies. However, Western cartoons may stray from reality, too, but they still remain more realistic, because of the fact that many Western cartoon characters resemble the human form. Western cartoons are often focused on plots that are funny or comedic. Most Western cartoons contain comedic skits that induce laughter and pure entertainment, which is why many Western animated movies are intended for younger audiences. Anime may focus on more serious subject matters that deal with mystery, romance, and violence. It does not follow a general theme or concept. That is why people who watch anime movies are part of a more mature or older population.
