These obligations do not exist in a vacuum. When help is given, then thanks should be given in return. This might not be true in times where emotions or circumstances are extreme, death for example, but even then, only a real angel can keep on giving without acknowledgement. Thanks can be simple. It can be as easy as a sincere word spoken, a card or the choice to send thank you flowers. Showing gratitude is complex, because while doing nothing can make someone feel offended and possibly taken for granted, doing too much can cause embarrassment. Follow your instinct or ask for advice. If you choose to send thank you flowers, you can be as simple or as elaborate as you feel you need to be. Forgetting to say thank you can lead to hurt feelings but can be easily remedied.
