Tui UK Ltd, the UK travel giant has been ordered to pay costs of £300,000 to the 138 tourists who took ill after being subjected to poor conditions on their holiday staying in a four star hotel in Bulgaria. Tui UK Ltd, which trades under Thomson and First Choice in the UK reached the settlement at the last minute before a two week trial was due to begin last week. Holiday makers who stayed in the Riu Miramar hotel in Obzor Bulgaria became ill after heavy rain flooded the ground floor, they were subjected to walking through mud and silt to get to the reception, faced poor hygiene, the pools were empty, there was no water, a strong smell of sewerage, furniture was lying around the hotel reception, they also reported seeing frogs around the hotel reception. Some of the tourists claim they are currently still suffering from the symptoms five years on from their holiday at the 4 star resort. Originally, the hotel manager dismissed the hotel guests’ complaints about suffering stomach cramps, sickness and diarrhoea and lethargy as being a result of ‘too much sand and sea’. Holiday makers who stayed at the hotel in 2006 described the experience as a “holiday from hell”. Many have had to live with the symptoms for years on top of the bad memories of the appalling conditions they were subjected to during their break. The scenario could have been avoided if the tour operator and hotel managers had put their guests’ safety first at the time. Guests have said they are overjoyed now Thomson have admitted liability but the tour operator has come under heavy criticism for not responding to the complaints earlier, as this would have prevented years of pain and torment.
