A PGA class A professional with over 10 years of teaching at the highest level will enable you the handicap golfer not only to reduce shots off your game with eliminating that dreaded slice, but will provide you with all the knowledge the golfer needs. 90 % of my pupils come to me with this common fault and by making them understand what causes a slice by explaining the 2 common denominators in the swing and process which cause this shot firstly every golfer needs to fully understand the source of the shot before they can even think about correcting it. This 5 step programme would take a teaching pro in the region of 6 lessons to explain what can be easily purchased read understood and initiated in seconds from the tip of your fingers. SLICE THE 2 COMMON DENOMINATORS. 1. First off the golf swing must be understood and this is simply the source of the slice in the swing itself this is simple it comes from an out to in swing path ie coming across the line of the ball at impact ( the bit that matters ) from outside to in , cutting across the ball from right to left as opposed from the club traveling to the ball at impact from a square position. Much like a tennis player playing a backhand shot resulting in a weaker shot. Key words remember RIGHT TO LEFT. 2. The second common denominator is the clubface that clubface of the club at impact will be open however many degrees but make no mistake the clubface will be open . Keyword OPEN These 2 points may seem obvious but it is essential that as a golfer who hits these shots YOU HAVE TO REALISE and build a pic in your mind that this is actually happening. 5 EASY STEPS TO CURING THE SLICE. 1. AIM - in 99 % of all cases your aim will be left of your intended target , please there are 3 ref points to your aim 1.feet 2. Hips and 3. Shoulders in most cases even if you feel your feet and shoulders are aligned correctly to hit a slice your shoulders will un doubtable be aiming left of target be conscious that your left shoulder in particular is aligned correctly - simple tip is to get a playing partner to check this ref point during set up of the shot. Quite often slicers of the ball will aim further left to accommodate for the slice , please do don’t this will only serve to aggravate and make slice worse. 2. HOLD/GRIP- a common fault with all slices is the way they hold and position there hands on the club they will always adopt a weak grip with both hands on the club. It is imperative that the left hand is positioned slightly to the right of centre to see the full 2 knuckles so the v created between the thumb and the index finger aligns to the right shoulder , likewise on the right hand the v must align to the right shoulder preventing the hand from coming on top of the grip too much and in a weak slicers position. 3. POSTURE - the way you present yourself to the ball in the set up is crucial to the way in which you take the club back in the backswing ie generally you will find most slicers will appear to stoop to low with their upper body and drop towards the golf ball, with a very hunched set up this will automatically cause the golfer to pick the club up on the outside line on the back in the takeaway - and start the out to in swing path immediately which as discussed is the swing path for slicers , a quick remedy to prevent this is to stand tall to the ball and concentrate on shoulder rotation in the backswing allowing your bigger muscles to work throughout , this done correctly will allow the club to start the backswing on the desired in to out swing path a swing path common with drawers of the golf ball. So remember stand tall with raised shoulders good tension in the lower back and concentrate on left shoulder rotation in the backswing. 4. BACK SWING- we touched briefly in point 3 on the importance of the swing path right from the word go, it is therefore imperative for all golfers who slice to feel a change in backswing to one that is generally fuller longer , and has a bigger range of muscle rotation, lets start with the takeaway we must eliminate all wrist action until the mid drift hip position it is vital to present the club back in a one piece movement , so the club , left arm , and shoulder are all working and rotating together allowing the club and hands to move back on the inside. Once this has been achieved to the mid drift position the wrists will then break automatically to the top of the backswing , all you have to do in the second part of the backswing to complement the good work you have done at the start , is to concentrate on the hands and the shaft of the club to be set behind the right shoulder at the top of the backswing ( easily achieved with shoulder rotation through this second stage ).If possible a 90 deg full shoulder rotation must be achieved , with golfers who have limited movement and restrictions , just feel that the golf club and hands are behind you as a unit and whatever stage of the backswing is completed. 5. DOWN SWING - following and continuing the theme in to out swing path, the approach of the hands and the club from the top of the backswing to impact must come from the inside , and you will find that all slicers of the golf ball even if they do have a good backswing position will always cast the golf club into the downswing , this means they will become separated and as the hands come down into the hitting area they will be coming down and to the right ahead and in front of your chest . It is therefore imperative to feel the hands in the downswing coming from behind you from an in to out position and if possible as close to the way the club went up. A good and exact feeling is that as the club head is approaching the ball at impact you should feel like the hands will be sending the ball on its journey slightly right of the target.
