In general, good search engine rankings that have STAYING POWER do not happen overnight. While there's always going to be new tricks that people discover to temporarily fool the search engines into ranking them higher in the short-term, from my experience these never last long and you end up getting penalized. Here's what usually happens. You enjoy a big burst of traffic. The search engines figure out what's going on. They tweak their system to whack your site for playing this foolish game and then you're banned or severely demoted. Once this happens, it's really hard to get them to "love" you again. I always encourage my clients to think more in terms of 3-6 month time horizons. In other words, use methods that may take a little longer (3-6 months) but once you achieve those higher rankings it is based on something REAL and your improved rankings will have more staying power. Over the years, I've had many new clients referred to me who accidentally got their websites banned or severely demoted because they accidentally spammed the search engines. Usually they were just following bad advice and had no intention of doing anything wrong. Your best guard against this is using common sense. Before you take on any new tactic for improving search engine traffic, ask yourself if this is something the search engines would see as "natural" - another popular term for it is "organic." Don't do crazy things that get the search engines to flag you for an unnatural pattern. This is a common way people get into trouble. They find some method that really seems to work. Maybe it got them listed on the first page results for a key phrase they were targeting. So what do they do? They go to town replicating the heck out of it - and THIS is what gets them into trouble. The search engines sense it as an unnatural pattern and demote them. Let me give you a good example. People discovered that it wasn't just the number of links (link popularity) but the words in the links that search engines used to rank them. Oh boy, people thought and they went out and started using their target phrase in EVERY SINGLE LINK they got. Guess what happened? They got their websites severely demoted. Search engines are programmed to favor sites that are constantly updated. They like to see websites grow naturally over time. Tweaking existing pages and adding new pages on a frequent basis is a great way to get search engines to notice you and "love" you. I want to emphasize that you do not want to add a bunch of pages all at once and leave your website to stagnate over the next several months. The search engine spiders will discover your big update and then come back to check you out again and again. If your site never changes after that, there's a good chance you won't rise in the rankings. It's actually better to sprinkle those new pages in over time if possible... or alternately, follow up a big update with smaller updates over time. People are obsessed with getting more links. This has made various types of link exchanges quite popular. A site gets a link for putting up a reciprocal link. However, if truth be know, it is good to have some of the links pointing to your site NOT be reciprocal ones. This is a more natural pattern. If you site has REALLY good content then other sites will naturally want to link to it regardless of whether or not you link back and the search engines have been programmed to reward sites that get these one-way links. There are many strategies for getting one-way links. Guest blogging is a good example. Find blogs that discuss topics where you can offer something unique. Maybe a fresh perspective, more information, useful tips based on experience, etc that isn't already covered on the blog. Contact the owner of the blog and offer to provide a guest post but make it clear that in exchange you would want a link back to your site - and preferably show them what the link would look like. For the last few years, we have been suffering from page rank mania. People are obsessed with PR (page rank). It seems like every self-proclaimed SEO guru out there is talking about the virtues of getting backlinks from sites with a PR of 6 or above (PR 6 is considered a very high page rank). While I do not disagree that it is beneficial to land a few PR6 links, it is far more important to get RELEVANT links from sites that match the content of your site. Most people don't realize the power of getting links from little niche sites. I can almost guarantee you will experience a boost in search engine rankings if you get these types of links - and this is a method that has STAYING POWER. You don't want ALL your links from PR6 sites or ALL from of them from PR2 sites. You don't want ALL your links to use the same wording. You want a variety of links. One word links, five word links, links that just say "click here," links that use keyphrases, links that just contain the URL. You want links embedded in the structure of natural sentences and natural language. You want links in headers and lists. You want a WIDE variety of links because this shows a natural pattern and will get you promoted in the rankings, not banned or demoted.
