This two year-old turned heads in his first maiden start at Monmouth Park, where he narrowly beat a slew of high profile contenders. More impressively, out of three starts, Vengeful Wildcat placed two firsts and one second. Wildcat was overlooked at the beginning of the season because he was behind in training and didn’t have his first start until May, whereas most of the horses started around the August mark. Trainer Ben Perkins Jr. says that he felt that Wildcat made a promising debut and trained extremely well right from the start. Perkins has some past wins under his belt in the Tyro in both ’87 and ’92 and is looking to add another trophy in the grade 3 prep, perhaps with Wildcat. With a graded ranking of 35th already this season, Vengeful Wildcat may just be headed towards Derby contention. With an excellent pedigree, this horse may well have the makings of a Triple Crown contender as we close in on the big event. Grandsire Forest Wildcat won nine races and two graded stakes in his time and dam Wild Snitch was a winner, with a very strong running style to her. Wildcat is her first stakes winner, perhaps he will be her first colt to vie for contention in the Triple Crown. As it stands, Wildcat’s debut is said to be the Fred Caposella at Aqueduct on March 5th (not yet run when this was written), which does not seem to be on the agendas yet for the top fifty horses in contention for the Derby in May. It will be interesting to see who Vengeful Wildcat will start against. Though this colt was small in build, hence a late start to his juvenile training, his build and looks are very reminiscent of Grandsire, Forest Wildcat. Hopefully he acquired his skill, stamina and speed on the track through his pedigree as well. If so, he will make a great Derby contender and give some of the other prominent hopefuls, such as Uncle Mo, a challenge. He fared well on several types of tracks last year in the five to six furlong length, including a “muddy” track at the Tyro Stakes where he took the victory. The Fred Capossela would seem to be right on the money for Vengeful Wildcat, given that it is a dirt track coming in at six furlongs. If training has gone as well at Gulfstream as it did last year, Wildcat is surely to surprise in rankings this year. Even after starting twice last year, Perkins had much to say about the performance of this colt. “It’s amazing how much he’s matured in just two races,” Perkins said. “Young horses get different after they race. Before he started, he acted like a goofy kid. But he’s experienced now, knows what the game is about. Just different than before.” This being said, a layoff of a few months and training into his three year old maturity should help Vengeful Wildcat in his race to the Derby.
