The existence of actual invisible line between people is the consciousness of personal field. People have different distances when they communicate with different people. According to the space and distance of people, we can also infer their relationships. In general, the spatial distance in communication can be divided into the following four categories: The intimate distance: It is limited within 45cm and it belongs to the private situation. It is often applied in couples, parents and children, and close friends. Commonly speaking, two adult men do not use this distance, but two female friends are likely to contact within it. The intimate distance is a very sensitive area and we could not use it easily in interpersonal communication. The wrong use of intimate distance could cause some misunderstanding and unnecessary awkward. The private distance: It is limited between 45cm and 120cm, in which people could reach out to the others’ hands. It is not easy to contact others and this distance is very suitable to talk about personal topics. Common friends often adapt this distance in their life. If people choose this distance to talk about their interesting topic with their friends, I think it is the most comfortable and relaxing thing. The social distance: It is about 120cm to 360cm, which suits the formal relationship in manner. In common workplace, people often use this distance for conversation. In some conference, people could also use this distance to greet each other if they are not familiar. This distance set an invisible wall between people, so people have to use it cautiously to show their good manner. The public distance: It refers to the distance far than 360cm. It generally applies to the speaker and the audience, a very blunt conversation with each other and informal occasions. In business activities, it is extremely important to select and maintain the appropriate distance according to the object and purpose of its activities. Many people are very sensitive to their spatial distance with others and they will feel discomfort if others invade their space. In the interpersonal relationship, people should have a general knowledge about it and choose the best one to deal with relationship with different people.
