When someone mentions the New England area of the United States what comes to mind for you? Some people will say quaint covered bridges and sleepy historic towns. Others might say beautiful waterfronts and fresh seafood. Beaches, summer, gorgeous autumn leaves these are all other common responses to the question. Chances are pretty good that when asked to think of new england you did not think of alpacas. Alpacas are still a relatively new animal for Americans even though they have been a common species in much of the world for centuries. However just because they are new or a little unusual does not mean that alpaca farms in new england should be off your radar. Most alpaca farms in new england are in the business for the alpacas wool, which is a thick luxurious material used to make exceptionally warm sweaters and other cold weather wear. Other alpaca farms in new england are about the tourism or a petting zoo type set up. Alpacas are common animals in many petting zoos because they are generally calm and friendly animals that add a little touch of the exotic to the average barnyard lineup. Alpaca farms in new england were once a fairly uncommon sight with only a few daring investors taking them on. Now however as word spreads about the quality of alpaca wool the number of alpaca farms in new england is steadily growing. While it is still a smaller number in comparison to say dairy farms that total number of alpaca farms in new england has been increasing in recent years and this trend shows no signs of stopping anytime soon. So while alpaca farms in new england may not be the first thing your think of when that part of the country is mentioned, give it enough time and it just might be!
