If there is such a thing as pressure for a horse, Biondetti would know about it. It’s not often that you have a horse with such promise strictly on a name alone, but when you are bred from Seattle Slew the pressure is on. Obviously I’m speaking figuratively; horses don’t know where they came from but the owners and the fans sure do. It will play out as a great story to watch. Biondetti is a 3 year old colt bred in Kentucky by Palides Investments N.V., and was purchased for $350,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky 2009 select yearling sale by Godolphin Racing. His trainer is Mahmood Al Zarooni. Starting undefeated, Biondetti maintained his unbeaten record with a decisive victory in the Group One Gran Criterium at San Siro, Milan on October 9, 2010. Progressing from a maiden win in August and a conditions event in September, Biondetti proved more than equal to the task of competing at the top level. Ridden by Ahmed Ajtebi for trainer Mahmood Al Zarooni, he was always travelling smoothly throughout the mile journey and was the last horse to be put under pressure with a furlong and a half to run. Responding readily when asked, Biondetti was too strong for the challenging Singapore Lilly in the closing stages and won comfortably by half a length, recording a time of 1m.41.5s on the soft ground. Boindetti came back to the U.S. and was entered into the Breeders’ Cup off the group I Gran Criterium Stakes at one mile on the turf in Italy and finished runner-up in that race. He scored by a half-length for his third victory in as many starts. A son of Bernardini—Lyphard’s Delta, by Lyphard, the bay colt broke his maiden in August at Newmarket on turf and then won an allowance tilt on the Kempton Park synthetic surface in September. With his two starts on turf, it was assumed that Biondetti would contest the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (gr. IIT) earlier on the Nov. 6 card, but after cross-entering both races Team Godolphin decided that the BC Juvenile on dirt would be the better choice. Input for that decision came from Biondetti’s trainer Mahmood Al Zarooni, a former assistant to bin Suroor who was promoted to a head Godolphin trainer earlier this year. Though bin Suroor was the head trainer of Vale of York, Zarooni helped develop the colt. Biondetti went into the recent Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile over one mile on dirt at Churchill Downs on November 6 defending an unbeaten record but the task proved to be too much on this occasion. Travelling to America for the first time and racing on an unfamiliar surface, Biondetti acquitted himself well under Ahmed Ajtebi and held a challenging position in 4th turning into the straight. He fought on well to go third before tiring in the closing stages to finish fourth to the impressive winner Uncle Mo, who is now the clear favorite for the Kentucky Derby this year. There is no question that this years run for the Derby at Churchill Downs will an exciting one. It hasn’t been this exciting in years with so many young contenders. Who will be the lone horse standing? We will see soon enough, one guarantee is that it will be one for the ages. For more information log on to www.horseracegame.com
