As more and more people take advantage of mobile broadband, the incentive for companies to target mobile internet users with adverts rises. And indeed, many businesses do precisely this. However, new research suggests that for the time being at least, this may not be a particularly savvy approach. A study conducted by Deloitte found that the majority of UK consumers ignore marketing material sent to their handsets. According to statistics produced by the organisation, nearly nine in ten individuals polled (88 per cent) revealed they do not read marketing messages sent to them on mobile broadband. Furthermore, 36 per cent automatically delete them. Indeed, of those polled only nine per cent took further action as a result of the ads. Promotional material that offered bargains and free use of an app or game were the identified as the most popular ways to encourage a response. Deloitte suggested that the reason for the poor response among mobile internet users is that many may feel as though such marketing is an invasion of their privacy. In its report, the firm stated: "Citizens in some countries may regard advertising sent to what they would regard as a personal device as intrusive and default to ignoring any advertising. "If this is the case, location-based mobile advertising to this type of audience may well be counter-productive." However, the report went on to suggest that while this may not be a strong area for mobile advertising at present, such activity is likely to grow stronger as time passes. Indeed, there is considerable incentive for marketers to target people via this medium.
