Mobile broadband is becoming increasingly popular among UK consumers and people are getting more savvy when it comes to sourcing mobile broadband deals. However, one expert has suggested there is an area in which such technology is falling behind in Britain. Speaking to IT PRO, Nigel Wright, vice president of wireless product marketing at Spirent, said a lack of quality spectrum has left the country trailing behind the US when it comes to Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology. He suggested that a lax attitude towards dividing spectrum could be the cause of this. The specialist stated: "You cannot underestimate the importance of spectrum." Making his comments during an interview at NetEvents in Barcelona, which provides vendors with an opportunity to meet the networking and communications press, he added that Europe is behind the "manic competition" seen on the other side of the Atlantic. Mr Wright added: "The thermo-nucleur attitude since T-Mobile kicked it off and the US desire for broadband anywhere has got companies worked up." However, this has not yet had a significant impact on mobile broadband consumers, who are mostly unaware of the speeds that could be achieved through LTE, he went on to claim. He also remarked: "From an end user perspective, they do not need to go to LTE today. An end user couldn't care less." While people who are "tech savvy" want LTE mobile broadband deals now, others just want to be able to stream their content, which is already possible, Mr Wright concluded by suggesting. The NetEvents conference that the expert attended was one of many such gatherings organised across the globe. Other recent sessions have taken place in Turkey and Singapore. According to those behind the initiative, participation at the events is an "ideal" and "cost-effective" way of complementing companies' existing PR programmes.
