Summer is a time of life we all enjoy, but the downside is getting insect bites. Common stings and bites are caused by insects such bees, hornets, wasps, spiders, yellow jackets, ants, mosquitoes etc. Usually the symptoms of a bite are swelling and redness around the area bitten. Normally the bite causes an itching sensation. Some bites are extremely painful. Also, sometimes insect bites cause allergic reactions. It is important to have a kit with you if you are allergic to bees and other insects. Fire ant receives its name from the bite given to its victim. The bite genuinely burns as fire. This is caused due to the alkaloid compound present in its venom. Once you identify the bite of a fire ant, massage and scrub the bitten area with warm water and soap. Take an antihistamine can reduce the swelling and redness. Other agents that can help include cortisone cream, arnica gel, aloe, ice and a paste with an aspirin. It is advised not to touch the eruption. If there are anybreathing issues, go to an emergency room right away. Another annoying insect is the mosquito. Not only are they itchy but their buzzing can keep you up at night. I remember at summer camp I was unable to sleep due to them flying arouhnd. You can use essential oils to treat mosquito bites. Tea Tree, Lavender or Clary sage can be applied directly on the area of the bite to provide relief. There are also citronella candles that can be burned when you are outdoors having a picnic that are helpful. Some moisturizers also contain this ingredient. Some also say that certain vitamins such as b-vitamins can offer protection against mosquitos. If you go camping, be sure to bring good netting for your tent against insects. Often old tents have little tears in them and putting netting around any tears or holes will help you get a good rest at night. Bring calamine lotion with you and also benadryl in case you do run into bugs that are aggressive during your trip. Enjoy the summer but be careful and stay protected.
