Radio refers to the process of transmitting a radio frequency (RF) signal from a signal source, for instance a radio station to a radio receiver at home. The signal is first processed by an amplifier and then coded or modulated before it is applied to the input of a transmitter. The signal is superimposed on a high frequency carrier. The resultant composite or modulated signal bears totally different characteristics. Included in the modulated radio frequency signal is the local oscillator frequency. At the receiving end, the radio receiver performs the reverse process of demodulation. First, the signal is received through the receiver’s antenna. This antenna or aerial as is commonly referred to; is connected to the receivers Tuner. Let us say the Tuner is that of a TV receiver or in later case TV card tuner, is the one in reference, this tuner in question receives the signal from the aerial. Since this signal has travelled a distance from the transmitting station, the major work of a TV Tuner begins. First, it amplifiers the weak signal, secondly it contains the local oscillator circuit which is tuned to resonate or “recognize” the incoming signal, thereby allowing it to pass through to the next stages of the receiver. TV tuners have evolved to become the video capture cards which have been integrated into personal computers today. They have been incorporated in such a way that you can record Television programs into a computer’s hard disk drive. Some video or TV tuners also double as video cards as well. Such a card incorporate a tuner and an analogue to digital converter commonly referred to as analogue front end-all compacted in one module. The microchips embedded within this module perform the process of demodulation plus interface logic functions. It ceases to be just a tuner but attains a multifunctional hybrid tasks. It suffices to note that an analogue one gives an output of raw video signal stream. This could only be useful for the purposes of viewing. It can be processed through compression so as to be coded into a jpeg format. Some ones with composite super video or composite video come with an Fm audio channel that is capable of resonating to normal off-air radio transmissions. On the other hand, hybrid it are configured to combine both analogue and digital properties for ease of use while switching from one system to the other. Another type of a TV tuner is the combo .It bears similar features to a hybrid it. It incorporates a two- in- one format in one module. With it, you may be able to watch a program based on digital transmission while carrying out a recording on analogue format.
