Chocolates contain theobromine, a substance which causes vomiting, diarrhea, seizures and an increased heart rate to a lot of animals. Dark chocolates contain the highest concentration of theobromine and you must keep them as well as other chocolate types far away from your pets. Your pets are also in danger from the flowers which are such an important part of the Easter tradition. If you are going to put Easter flowers in your home, you have to make sure your pets are not going to eat them. Some flowers like Easter Lilies are very deadly for cats. Aside from Easter Lilies, other toxic flowers include tulips, daisies and chrysanthemums. Still another danger is Easter Grass. If a cat ingests Easter Grass, the grass can cut off circulation in the cat's digestive system. Instead of using grass to line the basket of Easter Eggs, toilet paper, paper towels or napkins make a great substitute. Another thing to watch for is sugar free candy. This is because some sugar free candies contain Xylitol as a sugar substitute. Xylitol is also toxic for pets. Xylitol can cause a rapid drop in your pet's blood sugar. If a pet ingests a lot of Xylitol, they may get violent seizures and even liver failure. Make this year a warm and enjoyable Easter for you and your pet.
