A few schools believe that boys and girls have different learning styles and so they have separate, single-sex core classes and only get together in a few classes. Schools that focus on pre-professional arts or sports are specialized schools that aim to prepare students in certain athletic or artistic disciplines. Of course there may still be other extra-curricular activities but the main focus is clear. It's quite advantageous for children who exhibit proficiency in a particular subject matter. For example, in pre-professional arts schools, the education of students are further enriched by talking with practitioners of the arts who can give them advice not just on how to be an excellent artist but also on how to market their work, how to meet agents, how to start an exhibit, and more. Athletes can benefit from teachers and guest educators who are local or international athletic stars and give them a broader perspective on what they want to do after school, or really give them a good and clear track to follow. Many American boarding schools are college preparatory in nature. They give guidance and counseling to students who want to enter college. It's not just a matter of meeting the grade requirements (although this is a big factor), it's also a matter of understanding the application process and going through it in an organized way. There are many kinds of boarding schools in the country, and the best way to find the right fit for your child is to research them and find out if their program and facilities are what fits your child's needs.
