Eating snacks is a favorite past-time in America today. Some people eat extra food for comfort when they are sad. Others eat snacks because it is fun and gives them something to do. Snacking is fine and is one of the joys of life. There are an unlimited number of types of snacks to enjoy. However, if you are not a little careful with the types of snacks you choose, you could end up gaining weight or losing your health. Sugary snacks are one of the most popular types people like to choose. There are a wide variety of foods that are high in sugar that present a big temptation. Snacks that have refined sugar tend to add empty calories to your diet. They taste good and can really be addicting. Many people notice that they have an initial high from them and then later they feel a lower low than before they had the sugar. There is a lot of processing that goes into producing white sugar. Chemicals are added to refine the sugar out of the original sugar cane or beat. By the time, you get the end product, you have something that is very much like a drug. Drugs tend to be a single substance refined out of a plant. There are side effects that typically happen. Books have been written about how sugar can depress the immune system and put the body out of balance. Perhaps, you have noticed how children tend to get sick after Halloween, Christmas, and Easter. This is because they have had a little too much of the sweet candies and desserts. Studies have been done to show that the immune system can be depressed for four hours after the consumption of just one teaspoon of sugar. A piece of candy can have multiple teaspoons of sugar. Fruit is also sweet and comes from nature in a proper balance of fruit sugar, fiber, and vitamins. It is too bad that fruits aren’t give more prominence in the American diet. People could really benefit from having such a tasty wholesome snack. Parents should look to see what fruits are in season and offer these to their children instead of so many junky snacks. Children would grow up with healthier teeth and less illness. Fruits should not be eaten in excess though, as they have been shown in studies to contribute to a high amount of triglycerides in people. It would be wise to have about two choices of fresh fruit a day to contribute vitamins, nutrients, and fiber to a person’s diet. The best choice would be to use whatever fruit is in season. It is cheaper and also helps the body to deal with that particular season better. Watermelon has been shown to actually lower the body temperature and is therefore a great addition to your summer snacks. Oranges are great in the winter and help many people to avoid colds and flus since they are high in vitamins A and C. There is much to learn about making better choices for snacks. It is always better if you can do whatever you can to increase your health so that you can enjoy your life for many years.
