They have trained very hard and undergone considerable education to get where they are, and yet they are not regarded with the same good grace as a medical doctor would be. The respect that an MD receives is quantitatively higher than that afforded to an orthodontist in our society. They know it, too. Don't think for a minute that your oral health care provider isn't acutely aware of how the general public views those in his profession. Maybe it doesn't affect him, though. Many of these doctors, and they are doctors, have gone into things with the explicit intent of being the first likable member of their profession. This is why you can see so many different attempts to make the office look less austere. We like a certain sense of sterility and sensibility in our hospitals, but something about the orthodontist's office seems like it should be more friendly. Maybe it's just that we already dread the visit and wish that there was anything to take our minds off the impending cleaning. When it's over and done with, you might even find yourself asking what you were nervous about in the first place. He was not judgmental, he didn't make you feel bad about not brushing every fifteen minutes or whatever it is they want you to do. In fact, given the way you felt before you went in this may have been the least depressing visit to your dentist in Ottawa that you have ever had to make.
