One of the most outstanding examples of a well-established expat community are the towns along Lake Chapala. This beautiful lake is located less than an hour away from Mexico’s second largest city – Guadalajara – and has been home to American and Canadian retirees for decades. The history of Lake Chapala real estate for comfortable retirement actually goes back well over a century to the time when Mexico’s president Porfirio Diaz and the upper class from both Guadalajara and Mexico City (about 8 hours away) owned homes in the towns of Chapala and Ajijic for summer getaways and retirement.
