Anybody who can say that they are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary has something to be proud of. With the trials and tribulations faced by most couples today, making it past your ten year anniversary is already an incredible feat, never mind getting all the way to fifty. With each anniversary, comes a new tradition in terms of what gifts are expected. When it comes to your friends’ 50th, it is generally expected that you purchase something gold for the couple as it is their “golden anniversary. This is a tradition that translates into modern times as well and serves not only as a tradition but also a helpful guideline when you are stumped for what to buy. However, you can draw on some of the associations with gold to find a gift that is somewhat more unique and special. There is a great sense of optimism conjured from the idea of gold which first started when miners realized its value. You could always buy a gemstone that has a golden hue or represents those same characteristics. Alternatively, you could focus on the 50th anniversary flower which is violet. A bouquet of violets would be a lovely gesture or you could try violet printed crockery. Another option is a golden beryl, which is a beautiful and sparkling gemstone that goes well with earth tones and neutral colors. It’s considered the “poor man’s gold.” This stone can be incorporated into a set of jewelry or into ornaments. Ask your local craftsman to create cutlery or frames with golden beryl embedded in them. You can create the frames yourself if you are willing to buy the stone separately and attach it knowing you won’t make a mess. If the couple is religious you could consider buying them a gold wall cross. This will be something that they can each have individually or share that won’t use large amounts of gold but still serves as an elegant and relevant gift which they are bound to hold dear. There are similar options like personalized wind chimes (normally with a gold finish) that have an inscription at the top. This can be hung outdoors and serves as a reminder of their accomplishment and their love for one another. These generally give off beautiful sounds but the organ chimes are better for the slightly more pleasant tones. An unusual, out-of-the-ordinary 50th Anniversary Gift not related to gold but extremely appropriate is to buy a one-inch square lot of land in any of the 50 United States of the USA, but better is that you can get a tiny parcel of land from each and every one of the 50 states…not golden but one for each year that they have been married. If you know the couple well, you could make them an album or a scrapbook. Alternatively, offer to have a special, designer print made of their marriage certificate for the wall. This way they have the original when they need it but also something visual and exciting that literally represents their 50 years together in plain sight for everyone to see.
