Chatroulette is a website dedicated to providing a place for people to meet other people through online conversations. By using webcams as well as audio and text features, people can converse with other people no matter where they are in the world. You can chat with one or more people at the same time through different chat windows or you could join groups wherein you chat with different people in a single chat room. Ever since the creation of chatroulette, numerous people have gained interest in meeting new people in their own town as well in other countries all over the world. The website of the chatroulette was made by a 17-year-old high school student named Andrey Ternovskiy who originates from Moscow, Russia. He came up with the concept for this website from his experiences in video chats on Skype. This motivated him enough to be able to write the first version of his concept in just two days and three nights. As for the name, it is said that he was inspired by the movie “The Deer Hunter” wherein it shows prisoners who were forced to play a game of Russian roulette. He started acting on his idea through an investment worth $10,000 which he borrowed from his parents. He started chatroulette from his own bedroom while being assisted by 4 programmers who were also working on their own work spaces. They supported the site through links of advertisements from online dating services. The chatroulette site was launched sometime in 2009. Shortly after it was launched, the site was a success with 50,000 visitors per day. It was so successful that it was featured in top newspapers in New York like The New York Times, The New Yorker, and the New York Magazine. It was also featured on the television shows Good Morning America and The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Chatroulette had made it big in both the United States and Germany. There was even a parody of it in the 14th season of South Park. Chatroulette works just like the game Russian roulette wherein a user spins and gets to view and chat with someone by chance or luck. If someone spins again to get to another user, the person left is said to be “next-ed”. It has become such an interesting and exciting website that even celebrities like Nicole Richie, Ashton Kutcher, and Justin Bieber confessed to have participated in chatroulette. There are numerous sites that have tried desperately to imitate chatroulette but none have been successful enough to do so. The website has gained tremendous popularity that aside from being featured in South Park, it was also used in episodes of NCIS and in CSI: New York. During the Soundwave Festival in Australia, this website was also used by Faith No More to broadcast their live musical performances. It has definitely introduced a whole new way of meeting people and getting updated through video, audio, as well as text. The spinning adds to the excitement of meeting potential friends and dating partners as well.
