Blizzard Entertainment first released the original StarCraft in 1998 for Microsoft Windows, and shortly thereafter for Mac OS. The science fiction military game, using real-time strategy, became an instant hit, selling almost ten million copies since its publication. Blizzard Entertainment pounced on the chance to thrive off this popularity and came out with a newer version of the hit game. In 2010 StarCraft 2 was released and it was only a matter of time before millions of copies were being sold on a global scale. Similar to its predecessor, StarCraft 2 was also a science fiction, real-time strategy game. The game takes place five centuries from now into the future and is a strenuous battle between the Terrans, humans exiled from Earth, the Zerg, unsightly alien life forms, and the Protoss, sophisticated aliens with cosmic cerebral abilities. Each individual playing the came will take on the role of Jim Raynor, the captain of his or her ship, the Hyperion. With Jim Raynor and the Hypernion the game-play will take one through a long story line of campaigns. On each campaign there will be dozens of missions that the individual must complete and advance their character. Now while the basic concepts of StarCraft I and StarCraft 2 are the same, with new and developed technology over the twelve-year time span between them, much has improved. Key factors such as the three main groups of characters have remained constant (Terrans, Protoss, and Zerg). On the other hand a major improvement was made to the terrain of the maps. Unlike before, StarCraft 2 is a three-dimensional game, with units being able to travel over obstacles such as hills and mountains. Overall both are excellent games but the second one really tops off StarCraft I with the multitasking functions that Blizzard Entertainment has really put so much effort into making available to the user.
