Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs, otherwise known as CFL Light Bulbs or compact fluorescent tubes, are a miniature version of a fluorescent lamp. These energy-saving lights fit into the same socket size as the traditional incandescent light bulbs, allowing consumers the option replace all the light bulbs in their home.CFL light bulbs were designed to take advantage of the lower power usage provided by fluorescent lamps in a convenient, consumer-friendly package. Presently, they are significantly more expensive than incandescent bulbs, but can save a considerable amount of money in electricity over the lifetime of the lamp because of a longer lifespan. So CFL light bulbs offer the possibility for consumers to save money over time on their overall home light power usage. One downside of CFL's is that they contain mercury which can be hazardous to the environment and the health of the population. In recent years consumers have been encouraged not to throw them away in their regular trash. To counteract the hassle to the consumer, many home improvement stores now offer recycling programs for CFL's. The recycling process is interesting, consisting of first crushing the bulbs in a negative pressure ventilation machine which absorbs the mercury with a cold trap filter to consolidate the mercury vapor. The crushed CFL light bulbs are then shipped to recycling factories where they can be re-used safely. Contact your local home improvement store to see if they offer disposal services, and if they don't, encourage them to start one. The early CFL light bulbs emitted a unique light spectrum that turned many off because it was so different from the soft white light they were used to enjoying in their homes. In recent years, improved design has changed the color spectrum emitted by CFL's and now more consumers are interested in purchasing them to use in their lighting fixtures. If you understand the intricacies of the light spectrum, you might be interested in checking the packaging on CFL light bulbs where you will find a 3-digit-code that gives the color rendering index, or CRI, and color temperature of the bulbs. CFL light bulbs are also produced in other fun colors besides white such as red, green, orange, blue, and even pink. Blue CFL's are used for phototherapy in psoriasis patients or for infants with jaundice. Yellow CFL light bulbs are often used for outdoor lighting because they are not desirable to insects, so it reduces the number of bugs hanging around home porches and park benches. You can also find black CFL light bulbs used in theater and film for special effects. Because of their potential to positively influence the environment, many governments across the world have been encouraging their use for the past decade. CFL light bulbs have been the center of political controversy as some governments have taken measures to completely eliminate the use of incandescent light bulbs. Opponents argue that eliminating incandescent lamps will only trade one environmental hazard for another and take away consumer choice. In the meantime, consumers can decide for themselves whether they want to enjoy the money and time savings of using CFL light bulbs.
