Does it exist? Or, is it merely another ploy by alternative-health proponents to undermine mainstream medicine? In my experience, it certainly does exist. If I eat certain trigger foods, there is a great likelihood that I’ll wake up to at least a mild outbreak the next morning. The same is true for almost all the friends and family members who suffer from acne and with whom I have discussed this very issue. Does that mean there is a diet-acne connection for everyone? No. Nevertheless, I truly believe that getting your diet right is one of the, if not the, most important tools in combating and eventually eradicating your acne. Ask any reputable barber or hair stylist and they will tell you that changes in diet, even small ones, impact the health of your hair. Some foods make it dry, some make it oily, some make it shine. Your skin is no different. Why wouldn’t your diet, the things you put into your body and assimilate into your tissues, impact mankind’s largest organ (the skin)? Psychologically, my coming to appreciate this connection has helped immensely. For me, acne is no longer my “destiny,” a condition that has been forced upon me indefinitely and without my consent. Instead, it is a condition to which I am genetically predisposed, probably more so than most others. My lifestyle choices and my environment turned-on the genes that can result in acne. While I may never be able to turn those genes “off” for good, I can certainly still achieve my optimum skin health by optimizing my lifestyle, i.e., diet, exercise, sleep, meditation, hobbies, supplements, de-stressing, etc. Sometimes I have gotten away with a day or two of poor diet or sleep or no physical activity. This can be dangerous, as it leads us to believe that all this talk about optimizing your lifestyle is quackery. Do not exercise this flawed reasoning. Over the long-term, if you suffer from acne, it is likely that your lifestyle choices do and will continue to affect your skin. Other times, I have broken-out despite my best efforts to eat the right diet, spend enough time at play, take sensible supplements, and get adequate sleep. This, too, is dangerous; and, probably even more so than the above scenario. Such an absence of tangible results can absolutely crush your hope and your confidence. Make every effort to get past these bumps in the road. I truly believe that if you optimize your lifestyle, you will significantly improve your acne. In the weeks and months ahead I will try to explain how I have optimized mine and cleared 99% of my acne. www.clearskinlifestyle.com
