Using laminate flooring is a popular and easy way to update the look of a room, because it is less expensive and easier to maintain than hardwood flooring, and is available in many styles and colors. When considering laminate flooring for a bathroom, be sure to choose laminate flooring designed for use in bathrooms or wet environments. These will be moisture-resistant and have waterproof layers because of the potential for moisture and humidity (which can cause the flooring to buckle, warp and swell). The first step when looking at laminate flooring for your bathroom is to determine the look that you want to achieve. Measure your bathroom and map its layout. One main thing to consider is the way the laminate flooring will lay: do you want a straight-line edge look or an angled design? Check out the style and color choices available. Laminate flooring comes in many styles of hardwood, and even tile and stone--some with the appearance of grout in between the pieces. Laminate flooring comes in dozens of wood grain and color patterns. A style benefit of laminate flooring is its tongue-and-groove installation process; if you are looking for a contrasting color pattern you can choose between two colors and combine them as long as the manufacturer and products are the same. After you have looked at the different choices of laminate flooring, narrow your selection down and make sure that the choices of laminate flooring you're considering are appropriate for bathroom installation. Remember that not all laminate flooring is waterproof or moisture resistant. Check the manufacturer's recommendations for guidance as to bathroom suitability and installation requirements. If possible, bring some sample laminate flooring pieces home. This way, you can see how the samples look in your bathroom against bathroom fixtures and walls. Also view the sample flooring in both the day-time and night-time hours with the lights on and off so you can see how it looks with different lighting. You can also leave them in the bathroom to see how well they hold up to the actual moisture and humidity in the bathroom. It is also a good idea to check if any of the choices of laminate flooring you are considering come with warranties. In most cases, manufacturers may only honor their money-back guarantees if you follow the proper installation procedures. These procedures may include using glue between pieces of laminate flooring to make certain that moisture cannot seep into the sub floor, as well as placing a sealing coat onto the sub floor before the final floor installation. When you do decide on the style and type of laminate flooring to install in your bathroom, remember to use laminate glue on top of all the seams, to ensure moisture does not enter the wood. Also, extra silicon caulking should be applied around the outside edges of the laminate flooring as well as around the fixtures. Be sure to pay special attention to the areas around the bathtub and the toilet to make sure there are no holes. Remember, most damage to laminate flooring comes from water.
