A few matters of preparation are important when getting ready to install laminate flooring. Laminate flooring needs to acclimatize to the environment in which it will be installed for at least 48 hours prior to installation. Without this acclimatization of the laminate flooring, the laminate will expand or contract after the laminate flooring is already installed. To prevent this from occurring, leave the packs of laminate flooring in the middle of the room for at least two days before you begin installation. The base floor needs to be clean and flat prior to laminate flooring installation. Clean up any previous floor coverings and take care of any bumps or dips in the ground that may affect the laminate flooring. Additionally, if the base floor for the laminate flooring is concrete, it is important to keep the concerted dry. Installation of laminate flooring over a concrete floor requires the use of a vapor barrier while leaving the recommended overlap at the laminate flooring joints. The vapor barrier is not necessary when the laminate is being installed over a wooden floor. A standard foam underlay is the minimum underlay requirement with laminate flooring. The underlay can be laid either the same way as the laminate flooring planks or at right angles to them, either is acceptable. When joints are required in the laminate flooring, they should be butted together without overlapping. It is a good idea when installing laminate flooring to lay the planks of the laminate floor at a right angle to the windows, allowing the laminate floor planks to be in the direction of the light. This method will make the joints less visible though it is not uncommon for the laminate floor planks to be laid in the same direction as the longest wall in the room so the decision in which direction to lay the laminate floor planks is ultimately a matter of personal preference. Installing laminate flooring has a proper method of laying the laminate floor planks down. When installing the laminate flooring, lay the tongue of the laminate floor board in your hand into the groove of the board that has already been installed. It is important to ensure that the first two rows of laminate floor planks are straight. The required expansion gap between the wall and the laminate floor planks can be achieved by placing spacers between the wall and the planks. These spacers will also help balance out possible discrepancies in the wall. The gap between the wall and the laminate floor planks will be covered later when you install the laminate flooring trim or skirting. If using a hand saw or circular saw to cut the laminate flooring planks, be sure to cut the planks facing up. Face the laminate flooring planks downward if using a jigsaw. Cutting the laminate floor planks this way will prevent chipping the laminate surface. These tips will get you started in the right direction with installing your laminate flooring. The detail items such as transition bars and the laminate floor trim can be explained in the manufacturer instructions, online, or by visiting your local home improvement store.
