If you are the proud owner of a beautiful set of patio furniture, you probably know that maintaining and protecting it is an important concern. Experts recommend that you establish a maintenance schedule to help keep your patio furniture in good condition and safe from the weather. This will help your patio furniture last longer so that it can bring you enjoyment for many years to come. Here are a few basics to help you understand how to best protect and maintain your patio furniture. One of the most basic principles in protecting your patio furniture is to keep it out of harsh conditions as much as possible. In the winter, protect your patio furniture with waterproof coverings or store it away in a shed or garage to prevent mildew and rust from ruining it. You can purchase covers at your local home improvement store or online. Measure each piece of patio furniture carefully to make sure the covers will adequately protect them top to bottom. In a pinch, you can use garbage bags as covers for a short period of time. Store all of your cushions in a nearby shed or closet when they are not in use to avoid fading and damage caused by sun, rain and pollution. Establish a maintenance schedule to regularly clean your patio furniture from the stains caused by rain, snow, wind and animal droppings that may end up soiling your beautiful investment. When choosing cleaning solutions for each piece of patio furniture, make sure to read all labels carefully so as not to damage your finish. Use a damp cloth to clean the surfaces of the patio furniture regularly. At the end of the season, you can use a pressure washer if you have one, or use a cleaning solution of dish soap and water to scrub down the surface of your patio furniture. Metal furniture can be scrubbed thoroughly with a sponge or scrub brush. Any rust can be scraped away gently with a wire brush or sandpaper. Use primer to re-seal the metal and then repaint it. Plastic patio furniture is best cleaned with a soft cloth and mildly-abrasive cleaner or baking soda. Wood patio furniture pieces can be cleaned with a wood-cleaner and scrubbed gently with a soft cloth. If you find any mildew, use vinegar or a diluted bleach solution to sanitize and then scrub your patio furniture clean. For a beautiful shine, rub wood polish into the surface of each piece. To clean your patio furniture cushions and pillows, fill a kiddie pool with hot water and a few drops of all-purpose cleaner. Let the cushions soak for 15-20 minutes, then scrub them clean with a sponge. If you happen to have a pressure washer, you can make this job much quicker by simply spraying them off well. Make sure that you rinse each cushion carefully and let them all air dry before storing them away or putting them back onto the patio furniture. With regular cleaning and proper protection from the elements, your patio furniture will be beautiful and comfortable for many years.
