Whether you want a portable generator to take camping, to the site, or as a backup in case of power outages, you will find that there is a model that is perfect for you. Understanding how a portable generator works may help you make a better decision on which model will actually meet your needs. The main components of a portable generator are mounted together on a metal frame and include the internal combustion engine, starter control devices, the alternator, a control panel with outlets, the fuel tank and some protective devices. The fuel is burned by the engine, which drives a shaft which makes an electromagnet spin inside a coil. The type of fuel used by the portable generator can be gasoline, propane, diesel, or natural gas, and there are even some models that can use more than one fuel source. Depending on how you are going to use the portable generator as well as how often you will use it, they type of fuel used may be different. A gasoline powered portable generator is usually less expensive than other types, and works well for camping or when a portable generator is needed at a construction site. For long term emergency planning, the difficulty with a gasoline powered portable generator is the fuel storage. Gas fumes are quite flammable, so it is not safe to store large amounts of it and the shelf life is only about 6 months. In fact the fire code says only 25 gallons can be stored in residential buildings, and a 5000 watt portable generator could consume that amount in about 30 hours, which leaves you without fuel if the local gas pumps are out because of the power outage. A gasoline powered portable generator is the least expensive type and is a very good choice for most non-emergency applications. Propane for a portable generator can be safely stored in large containers and has a shelf life of at least 2 years. Diesel can also be stored in large containers and the diesel portable generator is generally thought to be the most efficient type, albeit more expensive than other types. Both the propane and the diesel types of portable generator work very well for emergency preparedness. With the ability to actually store the fuel onsite for an extended period of time, you will be able to use your portable generator when you really need it. Natural gas is generally used with a standby generator rather than a portable generator because of the need for a professional to install the fuel line. This makes it so the portable generator must remain in one location to be attached to the natural gas line, and you have lost the portability feature and might as well go with a standby generator. By knowing whether you need a generator for emergency or non-emergency needs and understanding how the different fuels work as well as their advantages and disadvantages, you be able a wise choice in the type of portable generator you wish to purchase.
