If you have purchased a new hot tub, or are considering a new tub for your family, one of the first things you will need to consider is the location where you will install it. When deciding where to place the tub, there are the considerations of space, electricity, water supply, and sun exposure, but one of the most crucial considerations to make is the support of the massive weight of a fully loaded and occupied tub. As water weighs over eight pounds per gallon, a full hot tub can be very heavy, thus requiring a very durable and solid foundation. One type of hot tub foundation is the prefabricated pad. A prefabricated pad consists of interlocking pads that form a sing, solid foundation that supports the weight of your hot tub. Generally, a base of sand is placed on the ground, with the prefabricated pads assembled atop the sand base. One major benefit of a prefabricated pad is that it is simple to move for relocation or completely remove. One of the more prevalent hot tub foundations is the concrete foundation. Concrete is extremely versatile and can serve a different purpose if the hot tub is later removed. Concrete is a very solid, low maintenance foundation and a pad of at least four inches in depth can provide plenty of strength to support the weight of nearly any hot tub. Similar to concrete is the gravel or crushed rock foundation. A reasonable depth for this type of foundation is four to six inches, and it is extremely important to make sure that the ground beneath the gravel is compacted well to support the weight. One advantage to using crushed rock to support your hot tub is that is provides a natural drain for water that spills or splashes out of the hot tub. Another stylish foundation for a new hot tub is a foundation composed of paver stones. When used as a hot tub support, either concrete or natural paver stones can be used. This hot tub foundation is very similar to the concrete foundation, but provides a more stylish and artistic appearance for your tub area. Concrete paver stones can be dyed to almost any color imaginable, making it easy to create an attractive foundation to match the design style of the area surrounding your hot tub, greatly increasing the versatility of your foundation. Having a strong, solid foundation for your hot tub is extremely crucial, as the weight of the tub itself, in addition to that of the water and the occupants makes for a very heavy load. An improperly supported foundation will allow the hot tub to settle unevenly and disrupt the levelness of the hot tub itself, resulting in poor performance, and could lead to numerous headaches in the future. To be safe, it is of utmost importance to establish a strong base to support the weight of your hot tub, allowing it to provide comfort and enjoyment for years to come.
