Security guards serve a very important purpose. They protect both people and property from anybody that might want to do them harm. Because a security guard's job is so important, special training is required to become a security guard in California. Depending on the level of security a person is involved with, they need to undergo certain training and receive a guard card, or a security guard license. The first level, a level 1 guard card, requires an 8 hour training course. This level deals only with unarmed security. It teaches how to legally react to certain events that may happen to a person while they are performing their security work. Security guards have some power, but they aren't police officers, so it is important for them to understand their legal boundaries. Level 2 guard cards require 16 hours of training. In a level 2 course, public relations and communication is emphasized. They again go over liability and legal aspects of a security guard's job. Guards are also taught how to properly observe and document events that they witness. The level 3 class is also 16 hours, but covers slightly different materials. Guards are taught about arrests and search & seizure. They are taught how to properly evacuate a group of people from a building. Officer safety is stressed, as level 3 work can potentially be more dangerous than lower levels. All of these guard cards provide training only for unarmed guards, so in order to carry a weapon, an officer must get their firearms permit, which requires its own 14 hour course. As you can see, security guard training is not taken lightly. It's an important job that requires trained professionals to do it right.
