Passa Passa The Dance That Could Help save Kingston

Entertainment
In the poor neighborhoods of Jamaica's biggest town, far from the common tourist traps, financial opportunities are handful of. Can Passa Passa, a wild, ribald, sweaty weekly dance party of up to twenty,000 transform that?

The club owner's identify is Popcorn the Legend, and he gestures toward the rugged parking great deal in front of the Garden of Eden lounge. "Park here," he says. "Support the bar, then go to Passa Passa."

It can be almost three:30 on a Thursday morning, and the narrow stretch of Spanish Town Street in the hinterland of West Kingston is clogged with thousands of revelers: Locals, Europeans and Us residents jostle with Japanese dancehall-queen wannabes. Raw, salacious and unadulterated, Passa Passa is not your parents' cookie-cutter holiday spot. The name is patois for "mix-up," and it is a phenomenally well-liked dancehall road party that occurs Wednesday nights into Thursday mornings in Tivoli Gardens, one of the island's most-feared "garrison" communities.

The huge draw is the scantily-clad video clip girls with painted bodies gyrating and mouthing the lyrics to each song. Male dancers with names like Cowboy, Ridiculous Hype and Sri-Lanka dance in clusters, their movements synchronized. Vendors hawk peanuts, candy, codfish fritters, corn soup, snacks and jerk chicken. The affable, bearded "weedman," a fixture at each Passa session, moves blithely via the crowd supplying dried marijuana stalks that promote by themselves. Maestro, the voice of Passa Passa, measures behind the DJ booth and whips the crowd into hair-pulling frenzy as he spins the most up-to-date club tracks-Nuh Linger, MySpace, Tek Weh Yuhself-chanting ribald lyrics about cunnilingus, loose women and homosexuality.

Come seven:thirty a.m., when the party starts to wind down, bus drivers taking locals to work will smile tolerantly while maneuvering through the throng.

Passa Passa was created in 2003 by members of Swatch Global sound system. Dylan Powe, chief executive officer for the occasion, explains, "It really is as authentic as dancehall culture arrives, and we're not interested in watering it down to make it far more palatable." It is ground zero for the culture: audio, artists, dance, style, slang, as is evident by the frequent presence of luminaries this kind of as Beenie Gentleman, Sean Paul and Shaggy. But its good results and longevity defies convention and background. More than enjoyment, it presents a viable economic possibility for Jamaicans.

But to realize why Passa may well be a constructive force, it's needed to know the culture of the communities acknowledged as garrisons. These communities-Tivoli, Trench Town, Concrete Jungle, Fletcher's Land and other folks-are governed by gangs and "dons" who manage their entrances and exits and act as a liaison amongst the neighborhood and political events. Wars are fought to defend political boundaries and territories, and protection of political events insulates the communities from law enforcement. By means of Passa Passa, music and enterprise have become a catalyst for entrepreneurship, peace and local community building. It really is also mostly totally free from violence-the troublemakers avoid trouble lest they face a censure and backlash from the neighborhood.

Practically 20,000 revelers flock to this ordinarily scorned neighborhood on a excellent night time, bringing their shelling out cash with them. As Popcorn informed me, "an unemployed particular person can 'trust' [purchase on credit] chicken, fish, cigarettes or a box of beer from a wholesaler and commence a company. Market, shell out the credit card debt and preserve it heading. Everybody revenue."

New artists come in the hopes of getting their new music played, established ones arrive to check new sounds and discover the next big point. Dancers-some of them as soon as violent gang members-operate to draw in the focus from massive-name entertainers, producers and promoters. These are opportunities to alter their situations in ways neither a gun nor a politician can. Powe explains, "The community's shut proximity to the harbor, the market place and as a main transportation hub for the island helps make it a middle for commerce. The reality that folks here have usually had their own retailers, businesses and hustle is a organic evolution of what is always been," Powe says.

Ironically, Tivoli is represented in the Jamaican Parliament by existing Prime Minister Bruce Golding. He neither condones nor condemns Passa, an function which arguably gives more economic possibilities for his constituents than his authorities can provide. Considerably of Passa's employees are residents of the garrisons. If the roads flood following a rainstorm, the vendors lend their handcarts and drums to bail water and clean the streets, so the event can still consider location.

Passa's reputation and ability as a social and cultural trendsetter has elevated about the many years. Many thanks to cell phones, YouTube and MySpace, what goes on at Passa events can immediately influence what transpires in far-flung locales from Brooklyn to Tokyo to London. Corporate sponsors have also taken discover as evidenced from the sturdy presence of brands such as Jamaica's Desnoes & Geddes, Digicel and Red Bull. Even so, the bulk of Passa's enterprise is derived from globally sale of CDs and DVDs, Passa events packaged with DJ, artists, dancers and the sound system as nicely as the recently launched T-shirt line.

Even though the videolight is on, the community is aware of they have the focus of the planet and, consequently, a stake in and accountability for their foreseeable future. "It can be not only enjoyment," Powe says. "We're creating a company product."

"Individuals may possibly not want to live it, but they are eager to encounter it. They love to say they had that drink at Passa."
